ADOSH Recognizes W.J. Maloney Plumbing for Exceptional Safety Program

On June 8, 2009, W.J. Maloney Plumbing Co., Inc. was recognized by the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH) as a vital contributor to the acceptance of the CityScape project as a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star site.

The Star Site designation is the highest level of the VPP, recognizing "exemplary worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health management systems" over and above OSHA standards.

Red Development is the owner and Hunt Construction Group is the General Contractor for CityScape. As Plumbing Subcontractor for CityScape, W.J. Maloney is the first and only Arizona Plumbing Subcontractor to contribute to the attainment of VPP Star status by a General Contractor.

In a letter to Hunt Construction Group, Mark D. Norton, Assistant Director of ADOSH, stated: "Everyone involved in the CityScape project should know that you have set the bar high when it comes to employee safety & health in the construction industry. It should be noted that without the cooperation of the subcontractor community and the commitment made by them to see this process through to its successful resolution it would not have been possible."

As a VPP Star Site, the CityScape project is now entitled to self-administration of safety programs without regular compliance inspections by ADOSH.

W.J. Maloney is carrying its VPP commitment and experience gained at CityScape forward into all its projects. This is of value to our construction partners, because the average VPP worksite has a Days Away Restricted or Transferred (DART) case rate of 52% below the average for its industry. As well, fewer injuries and illnesses mean greater profits as workers' compensation premiums and other costs plummet.

According to ADOSH, "The Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) promotes effective worksite-based safety and health. In the VPP, management, labor, and ADOSH establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system. Approval into VPP is ADOSH's official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health."
